And he stood before the altar of the Lord in the presence of all the congregation of Israel, and spread forth his hands:

Context

Solomon had just finished building the temple and had placed the ark of the covenant inside it. The ark held the tablets of the covenant the Lord made with Israel (2 Chronicles 6:10-11). Now the king gathered the whole nation for the dedication. He stood before the bronze altar in the temple courtyard, in full view of the people, and raised his hands in prayer. This public act prepared the way for his long prayer of dedication that follows.

Meaning

The altar was the sacred place where sacrifices were offered to God. It stood for God’s presence and was the center of worship. By standing before it, Solomon showed reverence and acknowledged God’s authority. Spreading his hands was a physical sign of prayer, surrender, and dependence on God. The parallel account in 1 Kings 8:22 says he spread his hands toward heaven, showing that his prayer was directed upward to the Lord.

Biblical connections

Solomon acted as the nation’s leader and intercessor. He stood before God on behalf of all Israel, blessing the people and seeking God’s favor. This public prayer reminds us that Christ is our great High Priest, who intercedes for us and whose sacrifice on the cross fulfilled the altar’s purpose.
