2 Chronicles 8:8

Posted on 18 May at 11:39

But of their children, who were left after them in the land, whom the children of Israel consumed not; them did Solomon make to pay tribute, vntill this day. 2 Chronicles 8:8 (KJV)

To understand this verse it is important to consider its immediate setting within the larger narrative of Solomon’s reign. The passage is part of a description of Solomon’s extensive building projects and the organization of his kingdom. Solomon, renowned for his wisdom and wealth, oversaw the construction of the temple in Jerusalem as well as a variety of other structures throughout the land.

The phrase “children of Israel” refers to the people of Israel, specifically the twelve tribes descended from Jacob, whose name was changed to Israel. They are presented in Scripture as God’s chosen people, and their collective history is recorded throughout the Old Testament.

In the KJV wording of 2 Chronicles 8:8, Solomon is said to have made the remaining children in the land pay tribute. The term “tribute” denotes a tax or payment made by one nation or people to another as a sign of subjugation or recognition of authority. In this context Solomon required the Canaanites who were left in the land to pay tribute, thereby acknowledging his authority and contributing to the kingdom’s prosperity.

Another rendering of the verse records that the children of Israel dwelt in the cities of the hill country, the plains, the eastern vineyards, and also in the cities formerly occupied by the Canaanites, Philistines, and Sidonians. This description emphasizes the geographical settlement of the Israelites during Solomon’s reign, showing that they inhabited a variety of regions, some of which had previously belonged to other peoples.

The Canaanites were the indigenous inhabitants of Canaan before the Israelite conquest. Although God commanded the Israelites to drive out the Canaanites because of their idolatry, the Israelites did not fully obey, and a number of Canaanites remained in the land. Solomon’s decision to impose tribute on those who remained can be seen as a practical measure to maintain control and stability over a mixed population.

The principle that can be drawn from Solomon’s leadership is the value of wise and pragmatic governance. Leaders today may learn from this example by seeking decisions that promote stability, fairness, and prosperity for their people, while also respecting the historical and cultural realities of their societies.

Overall, 2 Chronicles 8:8 provides insight both into the tribute arrangement that Solomon established for the remaining Canaanites and into the broader pattern of Israelite settlement across the hill country, plains, vineyards, and former Canaanite, Philistine, and Sidonian towns. Understanding the verse within its historical context helps appreciate the challenges faced by the Israelites and the importance of wise leadership in a complex, multicultural land.
