2 Chronicles 8:7
As for all the people that were left of the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, which were not of Israel,
2 Chronicles 8:7 (KJV)
Context
This verse belongs to the account of King Solomon’s reign, during his building projects, especially the temple and his palace. The writer lists the non-Israelite peoples who still lived in the land: Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites. These were among the original inhabitants of Canaan, the Promised Land. God had commanded Israel to drive them out when they entered under Joshua (Deuteronomy 7:1-2), but Israel did not fully obey, so these nations remained.
Meaning
The phrase “which were not of Israel” draws a clear line between the covenant people and the surrounding nations. These groups were distinct from Israel by ancestry and by faith. Their continued presence shows the result of incomplete obedience. The parallel account in 1 Kings 9:20 confirms the same list, showing this was a known historical fact. The Jebusites are especially significant because Jerusalem itself had been a Jebusite city until David captured it.
Biblical connections
God’s command to remove these nations was not arbitrary. He warned that they would lead Israel into idolatry and away from Him. The failure to remove them fully meant that their influence remained a danger. Later, Solomon conscripted these peoples for forced labor, which fulfilled the curse on Canaan from Genesis 9:25-27 and showed Israel’s dominance. Yet the deeper lesson is that partial obedience still leaves room for spiritual compromise.
Application
For believers today, this verse calls for honest self-examination. Just as Israel was told to remove these nations, we are called to remove anything that hinders our walk with God. This includes sinful habits, wrong attitudes, and ungodly influences. We must not allow complacency or compromise to take root. The presence of these nations reminds us to be vigilant in spiritual battle and to stand firm in faith.
Identify and eliminate habits or influences that weaken your commitment to God.
Stay alert against the temptation to blend in with the world’s values.
Pursue holiness, being set apart for God’s purposes in every area of life.
Reflection
This verse is not just ancient history. It shows that God takes obedience seriously and that partial obedience has lasting consequences. Yet it also points to God’s faithfulness. Even when Israel failed, God continued to work through Solomon to build His temple. In our lives, when we fall short, we can turn back to God. He is ready to help us remove what hinders us and to walk in His ways. The presence of these nations is a warning, but it is also a call to trust God’s power to overcome every obstacle.
