2 Chronicles 9:17
Moreover the king made a great throne of ivory, and overlaid it with pure gold.
2 Chronicles 9:17 (KJV)
Context
This verse appears in the account of the Queen of Sheba’s visit to King Solomon. She came to test his wisdom, and she witnessed firsthand the wealth, order, and glory of his kingdom. The throne described here was part of that visible splendor, serving as a tangible sign of the prosperity and authority God had granted to Israel’s king.
Meaning
The great throne was made of ivory and overlaid with pure gold. In the ancient Near East, a throne represented the king’s rule and judgment. Ivory was rare and costly, and pure gold added to the throne’s majesty. The Chronicler’s description emphasizes the throne’s magnificence as evidence of the glory God had given to Solomon. The following verses note that nothing like it had been made for any other kingdom, underscoring the unique honor of Solomon’s reign.
The ivory, being white, has been seen as a symbol of the purity, justice, and equity with which a king should judge his people. The gold overlay speaks of the splendor and worth of the king’s office. Together, they picture a rule that was both righteous and glorious, reflecting the wisdom and blessing that God had promised to Solomon.
Biblical connections
The parallel account in 1 Kings 10:18 records the same event, noting that the throne was overlaid with the best gold. This confirms the historical reliability of the description. The throne also points forward to the greater King, Jesus Christ, whose rule is marked by perfect justice and humility. While Solomon’s throne displayed earthly wealth, Christ’s throne is established on righteousness and truth.
Application
Stewardship: The use of valuable materials reminds us that everything we have comes from God. We are called to use our resources wisely and responsibly, to bring glory to Him and benefit others.
Gratitude: The abundance of Solomon’s kingdom reflects God’s blessings. We should acknowledge and give thanks for His provision in our lives, whether material or spiritual.
Humility: Solomon’s throne was grand, but Jesus, the ultimate King, demonstrated humility by washing His disciples’ feet. As followers of Christ, we are called to imitate His humility rather than seeking worldly displays of power and wealth.
Reflection
Consider how you use your resources, talents, and time. Are you seeking recognition, power, or material wealth? Embrace humility and meekness, following the example of Jesus. Serve others selflessly, reflecting His love. Seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit as you study, meditate, and apply the truths found in Scripture.
