2 Chronicles 9:23

And all the kings of the earth sought the presence of Solomon, to hear his wisdom, that God had put in his heart.

2 Chronicles 9:23 (KJV)

Solomon ruled Israel after his father David died. God chose him to build the temple in Jerusalem, which became the center of worship for the nation. His reign was marked by peace, prosperity, and extraordinary wisdom. This verse appears in the account of the Queen of Sheba’s visit, when she came to test Solomon with hard questions (1 Kings 10:1). The writer of Chronicles records that leaders from every nation sought Solomon’s presence to hear the wisdom God had placed in his heart. The Queen of Sheba’s journey is a key example of this worldwide interest, as she traveled a great distance to verify Solomon’s reputation for herself.

The phrase “all the kings of the earth” shows the wide reach of Solomon’s reputation. These rulers did not come for his wealth or military power, but to hear his wisdom. The verse is clear that this wisdom was not Solomon’s own achievement; God had put it in his heart. The Hebrew word for “heart” can also mean “mind,” showing that this gift was internal and divine. True wisdom, therefore, is a gift from the Lord, not a human accomplishment. This truth aligns with the broader biblical principle that wisdom comes from God, as stated in Proverbs 2:6. The verse also demonstrates that God-given wisdom attracts attention and brings influence, as leaders from many nations sought Solomon’s counsel. This influence was not for Solomon’s personal glory but was a testimony to the God who gave him such insight.

Solomon’s wisdom began with his humble request in 1 Kings 3, when he asked God for understanding to govern his people justly. God was pleased and gave him wisdom beyond any other king. The parallel account in 1 Kings 10:24 confirms that all the earth sought Solomon to hear his wisdom, which God had put in his heart. This connection shows that the Chronicler and the author of Kings both emphasize the same truth: wisdom comes from God. Proverbs 2:6 states that the Lord gives wisdom, which matches the testimony of Solomon’s life. The consistency across these passages reinforces that the source of true wisdom is divine, not human effort or intellect.

God-given wisdom attracts attention and brings influence. When believers seek wisdom from God, they can make sound decisions and help others. Solomon’s example encourages us to ask God for discernment in our daily lives. At the same time, his later years warn us not to trust in wealth or human achievement. Solomon turned away from God, and his kingdom suffered. We must prioritize our relationship with God above all else and use every blessing for His glory. As we receive wisdom, we should remember that it is a gift meant to point others to Him, not to elevate ourselves.

This verse reminds us that wisdom is a reflection of God’s grace. Even the greatest human wisdom should point others to Him. As we receive wisdom from God, we should share it humbly, knowing that it is a gift. Let us seek His guidance continually and give Him thanks for every insight He provides. When others notice the wisdom in our words or decisions, we can direct their attention to the One who gives generously to all who ask.
