Blessed be the Lord thy God, which delighted in thee to set thee on his throne, to be King for the Lord thy God: because thy God loued Israel, to establish them for euer, therefore made hee thee King ouer them, to doe iudgement and iustice. 2 Chronicles 9:8 (KJV)

Historical Context: 2 Chronicles 9:8 is part of a passage that describes the encounter between King Solomon of Israel and the Queen of Sheba. The Queen visited Solomon, bringing gifts and asking him questions to test his wisdom. Solomon answered her questions and displayed his great wisdom and wealth.

Acknowledging God’s Delight: The verse begins with praise and acknowledgment to the LORD God, recognizing that it is God who delighted in Solomon and chose him to be king over Israel. This highlights divine favour and the sovereignty of God in selecting and establishing leaders.

God’s Love for Israel: The verse explains that God’s choice of Solomon as king was an expression of His love for Israel. God had a special covenant relationship with the nation and desired to establish them forever. By making Solomon king, God demonstrated His commitment to fulfilling His promises and ensuring the well‑being of His people.

The Purpose of Kingship: The passage reveals that God appointed Solomon to execute judgment and justice. As king, Solomon was responsible to rule with righteousness, making just decisions and ensuring that justice was carried out among the people. This emphasizes the importance of leadership that upholds moral and ethical principles.

Application:

Recognition of God’s Favour: Like Solomon, we should acknowledge that any positions of authority or blessings we receive are ultimately the result of God’s favour and grace. It reminds us to be humble and give credit to God for the opportunities we have.

God’s Love and Covenant: Just as God loved and established Israel, He loves and cares for His people today. We can find assurance in God’s faithfulness to His promises and His commitment to our well‑being.

Responsibility of Leaders: Leaders, whether in political authority, business, or any other area, have a responsibility to lead with justice and integrity. This verse reminds leaders to prioritize doing what is right and just, ensuring fairness and equality for all.

Gratitude and Worship: The verse begins with praise and blesses the LORD. It serves as a reminder to express gratitude and worship to God for His goodness and blessings in our lives.
