2 Corinthians 11:2

“For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.”

Context:To fully understand a verse, it’s important to consider its context. In the preceding verses, the apostle Paul expresses his concern for the Corinthian church, which he had planted. He was worried that false apostles were leading the Corinthians astray with their teachings. In verse 1, Paul begins by saying, “Would to God ye could bear with me a little in my folly: and indeed bear with me.” He then proceeds to express his jealousy over the Corinthians with godly jealousy.

Jealousy with godly jealousy:Paul’s use of the term “jealousy” may seem negative, but in this context, it refers to his deep concern and protective love for the Corinthian believers. He wasn’t envious or possessive of them but rather had a godly zeal for their spiritual well‑being. Paul’s jealousy was motivated by his desire to see them remain faithful to Christ.

Espoused you to one husband:In the ancient Jewish culture, betrothal was a formal agreement that preceded marriage. The betrothed couple was legally bound to each other but did not yet live together or engage in a physical relationship. Paul uses the metaphor of betrothal to illustrate the relationship between the Corinthian believers and Christ. He sees himself as a spiritual parent who has arranged the betrothal of the Corinthian church to Christ.

Present you as a chaste virgin to Christ:Paul’s ultimate goal was to present the Corinthian church to Christ as a pure and faithful bride. The phrase “chaste virgin” refers to spiritual purity and faithfulness. Paul wanted to ensure that the Corinthians would remain devoted to Christ, uncorrupted by false teachings or the temptations of the world.

Application:As we reflect on this verse, there are a few key lessons we can draw:

• The importance of spiritual fidelity: Just as a bride is expected to be faithful to her husband, believers are called to be faithful to Christ. We should guard ourselves against false teachings, distractions, and temptations that can lead us away from our devotion to Christ.
• The role of spiritual leaders: Paul’s concern for the Corinthian church exemplifies the responsibility of spiritual leaders to nurture and protect the faith of their congregations. They should have a godly jealousy and deep concern for the spiritual well‑being of those under their care.
• The purity of the Church: The Church is often referred to as the bride of Christ. It is the responsibility of every believer to strive for purity and holiness, individually and collectively, so that we may be presented blameless before Christ.
