2 Corinthians 2:14
Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.
2 Corinthians 2:14 (KJV)
Context
The Apostle Paul wrote 2 Corinthians to the church in Corinth. In the verses just before this one, Paul describes how a door was opened for him at Troas to preach the gospel. That experience of God’s help leads him to burst out in thanksgiving. This verse is a doxology, a short expression of praise to God, and it sets the tone for the rest of the letter.
Meaning
Paul begins, “Now thanks be unto God.” This is not a casual remark; it is a deliberate act of worship. Paul recognizes that every good thing in his ministry comes from God, so his first response is gratitude.
The verse then says that God “always causeth us to triumph in Christ.” The Greek word Paul uses here brings to mind a Roman triumphal procession, where a victorious general leads his captives and celebrates his victory. Paul’s point is not that believers are the triumphant conquerors. Rather, God is the one who leads us in triumph, and the victory belongs to Him. It is accomplished “in Christ,” through His death and resurrection. This is a constant, ongoing reality, not a one-time event. Because believers are united with Christ, we share in His victory over sin, death, and the powers of darkness.
Paul also says that God “maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.” The word “savour” means fragrance or aroma. Just as a sweet perfume spreads through a room, the knowledge of God is spread through believers wherever they go. This is not something we produce ourselves; God is the one who makes His knowledge known through us. We are the vessels, the instruments, through which He works.
Biblical connections
This verse connects to the broader biblical theme that God is the source of both victory and witness. The triumph and the spreading of the knowledge of God are both God’s work, done through believers. This reminds us that our lives are not about self-promotion but about God manifesting His knowledge through us.
Application
This verse encourages us to cultivate a heart of gratitude. Even when we face difficulties, we can give thanks for God’s faithfulness and for the victory we have in Christ. We are not defeated by the challenges of life; we can live in the assurance of His triumph and draw strength from His power.
It also calls us to be intentional about sharing the gospel. Through our words and our lives, we are to reflect the character of Christ and make His grace known to others. As we go about our daily lives, we can trust that God will use us to spread the sweet fragrance of His knowledge in every place.
Reflection
Take a moment to consider: in what areas of your life do you need to remember that God is the one who leads you in triumph? How can you be more aware that He is making His knowledge known through you today? Let this verse encourage you to live with gratitude, confidence, and a passion for sharing the gospel.
