Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God.

Context

Paul wrote 2 Corinthians to the church in Corinth, addressing their hope in Christ and the future resurrection body. In this chapter, he also unfolds the ministry of reconciliation—the joyful work of helping people be brought back into right relationship with God. Meaning

Paul declares that believers are ambassadors for Christ. An ambassador is an official representative sent by a higher authority to speak and act on its behalf in a foreign land. As Christians, we are not merely messengers of our own opinions; we represent Christ Himself, carrying His message and embodying His character in the world.

The phrase “as though God did beseech you by us” shows that the appeal originates with God. He uses His people as vessels to communicate His love, grace, and truth. The ambassador is the vehicle through which God’s plea is delivered. Paul and his fellow workers make this appeal as if they were standing in the place of Christ, and they pray on behalf of others in the same way. This underscores the urgency and authority of their message.

The content of the appeal is “be ye reconciled to God.” Reconciliation means the restoration of a broken relationship. Through sin, humanity was separated from God, but through Jesus Christ, we can be reconciled to Him.
