2 Corinthians 5:5

Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit.

2 Corinthians 5:5 (KJV)

The apostle Paul wrote 2 Corinthians to the church in Corinth, addressing their struggles and encouraging them in their faith. In this chapter, he speaks of the believer’s hope of resurrection and the eternal dwelling that God has prepared. The immediate context (2 Corinthians 5:1-4) contrasts our earthly body, described as a tent, with the heavenly building that awaits us. Verse 5 anchors that hope in God’s own action.

Paul declares, “Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God.” The word “wrought” means to shape, create, or prepare. God is the one who has designed and formed believers for a specific purpose: the future resurrection and the glorified life in eternity. This preparation is not something we achieve; it is God’s sovereign work in us.

Paul then adds, “who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit.” The term “earnest” refers to a down payment or pledge that guarantees the fulfillment of a promise. In the Greek, the word is arrabōn, a deposit that secures the full payment. The Holy Spirit, given to believers now, is that guarantee—a foretaste of the blessings and inheritance that await us in heaven. The Spirit’s presence is both evidence of God’s work in us and assurance that He will complete what He has begun.

This verse emphasizes that the entire process—from preparation to final glorification—is God’s doing. Our confidence rests not in human effort but in God’s faithful work and His gift of the Spirit.

  • Trust in God’s Work: Recognize that God is actively shaping and preparing you for His purposes. Trust His plan and yield to His work in your heart and life.

  • Seek the Holy Spirit’s Guidance: As believers, we have the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. Seek His guidance, empowerment, and comfort in life’s challenges, knowing He is the guarantee of God’s promises.

  • Live with Eternal Perspective: This life is not the end. There is a future hope and glory awaiting believers. Live with that eternal perspective, honouring and glorifying God in the present.

God has prepared us for glory and given us His Spirit as the pledge. Let this assurance shape how we live each day, with confidence in His faithful work and hope in the life to come.
