Nevertheless God, that comforteth those that are cast down, comforted us by the coming of Titus;

Context
The apostle Paul wrote 2 Corinthians to the church in Corinth. In this verse, he expresses joy and gratitude for the comfort God provided through the arrival of Titus, his trusted companion and fellow laborer in ministry. The word “Nevertheless” marks a decisive turn from Paul’s account of distress in Macedonia, where he faced “fightings without, and fears within” (2 Corinthians 7:5).
Meaning
Paul begins by acknowledging that God is the ultimate source of comfort for those who are cast down—those humbled under affliction or discouraged. This emphasizes God’s compassion and care for His people, showing that even in difficult situations, God is present to bring solace and encouragement. God’s comfort is His characteristic work: He revives the hearts of the humble and cheers drooping spirits.
Paul specifically mentions how God comforted him and his companions through the coming of Titus. Titus’s presence brought encouragement both personally and in ministry, and the report he brought of the Corinthians’ longing, mourning, and zeal for Paul increased Paul’s joy (2 Corinthians 7:7).
