Listen to this article

“AND we have sent with him the brother, whose praise is in the gospel throughout all the churches.”

Context:Before delving into 2 Corinthians 8:18, it’s important to understand the context of the passage. The Apostle Paul is writing to the Corinthian church regarding the collection he was organizing for the poor Christians in Jerusalem. In this section, Paul is discussing the delegation of trusted individuals who would accompany him to deliver the offering.

The Brother: In verse 18, Paul mentions “the brother.” The identity of this brother is not explicitly mentioned in this verse, but based on the surrounding verses (2 Corinthians 8:16-23), it is likely that Paul is referring to an unnamed companion or co-worker who was selected to assist with the collection and delivery of the offering. This person was well-regarded in the preaching of the gospel throughout various churches.

Praise in the Gospel: Paul states that the brother’s “praise is in the gospel throughout all the churches.” This indicates that the unnamed brother had gained a good reputation and was highly regarded for his work in sharing the gospel. His commitment and dedication to spreading the message of Christ had garnered him praise from multiple congregations.

Lessons and Applications:

  • a. Importance of Cooperation: The involvement of this brother demonstrates the value of teamwork and cooperation in the service of God. In this case, the brother was selected and sent alongside Paul to assist in the noble task of collecting and delivering the offering. This highlights the significance of working together to accomplish God’s purposes.
  • b. Faithfulness and Reputation: The brother’s praise in the gospel signifies that he had faithfully carried out his ministry and had a good reputation among the churches. This serves as a reminder that as Christians, our character and conduct should reflect the teachings of the gospel, leading to a positive impact and commendation from others.
  • c. Recognizing Unsung Heroes: Although the brother remains unnamed, Paul acknowledges his significant contribution and his service in the spreading of the gospel. This reminds us of the many unsung heroes within the Church who faithfully serve without seeking recognition or prominence. It encourages us to appreciate and honor those who labor diligently behind the scenes for the sake of God’s kingdom.

Overall Message: In the broader context of 2 Corinthians 8, the passage emphasizes the principles of generosity, unity, and stewardship in the Christian community. The unnamed brother’s inclusion in the delegation illustrates the importance of cooperation, the value of a good reputation, and the acknowledgment of those who faithfully serve God’s purposes.
