And when he was departed thence, he lighted on Jehonadab the son of Rechab coming to meet him: and he saluted him, and said to him, Is thine heart right, as my heart is with thy heart? Context

In 2 Kings 10, Jehu carries out God’s judgment on the house of Ahab and removes Baal worship from Israel. After this purge, he meets Jehonadab, the son of Rechab. Jehonadab was the founder of the Rechabites, a family known for their strict obedience to their ancestor’s commands. Those commands forbade drinking wine, planting vineyards, sowing seed, and required living in tents rather than permanent houses. Their faithful lifestyle stood in contrast to the idolatry common in Israel at that time.

Meaning

Jehu greeted Jehonadab and asked, “Is thine heart right, as my heart is with thy heart?” This question probes the sincerity of Jehonadab’s commitment. Jehu needed trustworthy allies in his campaign against Baal worship. The heart, representing the innermost being and motives, was the measure of true loyalty. When Jehonadab affirmed that his heart was right, Jehu said, “If it be, give me thine hand.” The handshake and the invitation into the chariot symbolized a covenant of fellowship and shared purpose. This gesture showed mutual trust and cooperation in God’s work.

Biblical connections

The Rechabites’ obedience is later commended in Jeremiah 35, where God holds them up as an example of faithfulness. Their loyalty to Jehonadab’s commands contrasts with Israel’s disobedience to God. Jehonadab’s alliance with Jehu shows that godly partnerships can be formed for God’s purposes. However, caution is needed. Jehu’s zeal was mixed with political ambition, and his later actions were not fully pleasing to God, as noted in Hosea 1:4.
