The book of 2 Kings continues the historical narrative of Israel’s monarchs. In chapter 10 the prophet‑anointed king Jehu carries out God’s judgment against the house of Ahab, destroying the prophets and worshipers of Baal. After this purge Jehu meets Jehonadab, the son of Rechab, a man noted for his zeal for God and for the strict lifestyle he imposed on his descendants, including abstaining from wine and living in tents. This encounter occurs as Jehu presses on with his mission to eradicate Baal worship.

Jehonadab the son of Rechab was the leader of the Rechabites, a group renowned for faithfully observing the commandments of their ancestor Jehonadab. Those commandments forbade drinking wine, planting vineyards, sowing seed, and required living in tents rather than permanent houses. Their obedience stood in stark contrast to the idolatrous practices that had become common in Israel at that time.

When Jehu encountered Jehonadab, he greeted him and asked, “Is thine heart right, as my heart is with thy heart?” Jehu sought to determine whether Jehonadab shared the same zeal for God and commitment to righteousness. The question was crucial because Jehu needed trustworthy allies in his campaign against Baal worship. The heart, representing the innermost being and motives, was the measure of true loyalty.

Jehu’s desire for unity is shown when Jehonadab affirmed that his heart was indeed right. Jehu then extended his hand, saying, “If it be, give me thine hand,” and took Jehonadab up into the chariot. This gesture symbolised partnership and an agreement to work together toward their shared goal of purifying Israel.

Genuine faith and obedience – Jehonadab’s steadfast adherence to his forefather’s commands exemplifies unwavering faithfulness. It reminds believers to hold fast to God’s principles and to live lives that reflect obedience to His Word.

Discerning hearts – Jehu’s probing question challenges us to examine the condition of our own hearts. We must ask whether our motives align with God’s will and seek honesty in evaluating our spiritual posture.

Partnership in God’s work – The invitation to join the chariot illustrates the power of unity in accomplishing God’s purposes. When we find like‑minded believers who share a passion for serving God, we can join forces, support one another, and fulfill the tasks set before us.
