2 Kings 11:13

And when Athaliah heard the noise of the guard and of the people, she came to the people into the temple of the Lord.

2 Kings 11:13 (KJV)

This event takes place at the moment Joash is being anointed as the rightful king of Judah. Athaliah, the idolatrous queen who seized power, hears the noise of the guard and the people and comes to them in the temple of the Lord. The parallel account in 2 Chronicles 23:12 clarifies that the noise was the people running and praising the king at his coronation. By this time, the people had knowledge of the affair and were flocking to see the new king and express their joy. Her entry into the sacred temple shows her audacity and her disregard for the holiness of God’s dwelling place.

Athaliah’s presence in the temple reveals her desperation to hold on to power. She trespasses upon sacred ground, symbolizing the contrast between her unrighteousness and the righteousness of God’s covenant. The temple was the central place of worship and symbolized God’s presence among His people. Her act is a stark reminder of corrupt leadership and the need for rulers who honor God and His commands.

Despite Athaliah’s attempts to destroy the royal offspring of the house of David, God preserved Joash, who had been hidden and protected. This preservation ensured the fulfillment of God’s promise to establish an everlasting kingdom through David’s descendants. The verse underscores that God’s plan for His people and His anointed king cannot be thwarted by human schemes.

This verse calls us to examine our own respect for God’s holiness. Just as Athaliah disregarded the sacredness of the temple, we may be tempted to treat holy things carelessly. We are reminded to honor God’s presence and to trust that His plans will prevail, even when human power seems to oppose them.

God’s sovereignty is a source of hope. Even when wickedness appears to triumph, He remains in control. The preservation of the Davidic line points to the coming of Christ, the ultimate King. We can rest in the assurance that God’s covenant promises are sure.
