2 Kings 14:24

Posted on 18 May at 11:19

And hee did that which was euill in the sight of the Lord: hee departed not from all the sinnes of Ieroboam the sonne of Nebat, who made Israel to sinne. 2 Kings 14:24 (KJV)

Context: To understand the significance of 2 Kings 14:24, it’s important to consider the historical and cultural context. This verse is part of the narrative of the kings of Judah, specifically referring to the reign of Amaziah, who was the eighth king of the southern kingdom of Judah. Amaziah became king at the age of 25 and reigned for approximately 29 years. Initially, he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, though not with a perfect heart, and followed the Law of Moses to the extent of his ability. He avenged his father’s death and gained victory in battle against the Edomites. However, he did not fully commit himself to God and fell into sin. The verse highlights that Amaziah did not depart from all the sins of Jeroboam, the son of Nebat. Jeroboam, the first king of the northern kingdom of Israel, introduced a form of worship that deviated from God’s prescribed ways. He set up golden calves in Bethel and Dan, encouraging the people to worship these idols instead of going to Jerusalem. This led to idolatry and a departure from true worship. Despite initially doing what was right, Amaziah failed to learn from the mistakes of his predecessors, particularly Jeroboam. He continued in the pattern of sin, perpetuating the idolatrous practices that had plagued Israel. Throughout the Bible, we see that sin has consequences. Amaziah’s failure to turn away from the sins of Jeroboam resulted in his downfall. Later in his reign, Amaziah challenged Jehoash, the king of Israel, to battle and suffered a devastating defeat. This defeat led to the downfall of Amaziah and the weakening of the southern kingdom of Judah.
