2 Kings 15:31

Posted on 18 May at 11:18

And the rest of the actes of Pekah, and all that he did, behold, they are written in the booke of the Chronicles of the kings of Israel. 2 Kings 15:31 (KJV)

And the rest of the acts of Shallum, and his conspiracy which he made, behold, they are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel.

Context: 2 Kings 15:31 records a brief reference to Shallum’s conspiracy, stating that details of his actions are documented in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel.

Historical Background: This verse is part of the historical account of the divided kingdom of Israel. After the reign of Solomon, Israel was divided into two kingdoms: the northern kingdom (also called Israel) and the southern kingdom (Judah). The northern kingdom, Israel, was characterised by a series of kings who disobeyed God and led the people into idolatry and wickedness. Shallum was one of the kings of the northern kingdom of Israel. He came to power through a conspiracy, assassinating Zechariah. His act of killing the reigning king was an act of violence and rebellion against the authority established by God. Shallum’s reign lasted only one month before he was overthrown by Menahem, who became the next king of Israel.

Consequences of Sin: Shallum’s act of rebellion and assassination brought judgment upon him. His reign was cut short, and his name is not remembered for any positive achievements. This serves as a reminder that sin has consequences and ultimately leads to destruction.

Trust in God’s Authority: Shallum’s conspiracy against the rightful king highlights the importance of respecting God’s established authority. God had appointed Zechariah to rule, and Shallum’s rebellion was an affront to God’s plan. As believers, we are called to submit to the authorities that God has placed over us (Romans 13:1).

Faithfulness to God’s Word: The verse also mentions the existence of the “book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel,” which documented the acts of the various kings. This emphasises the importance of recording and preserving history, especially in relation to God’s dealings with His people. It also encourages us to pay attention to God’s Word, which serves as a record of His actions, promises, and instructions.

Application: Shallum’s story serves as a warning against rebellion, violence, and disregard for God’s authority. It reminds us of the importance of living in obedience to God’s Word and respecting the authorities He has established. Additionally, it encourages us to consider the consequences of our actions and seek to be faithful to God in all aspects of our lives. Remember, when studying the Bible, it is beneficial to consider the broader context and explore related passages to gain a deeper understanding of the message and its application to our lives.
