2 Kings 15:34

Posted on 18 May at 11:18

And he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord: hee did according to all that his father Uzziah had done. 2 Kings 15:34 (KJV)

Context: To fully understand the significance of this verse, let’s examine the context. This verse refers to the reign of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, who became the king of Judah. Uzziah was a king who started off well, but later fell into pride and was struck with leprosy. Nevertheless, during the earlier part of his reign, Uzziah sought the Lord and did what was right. Jotham, following in the footsteps of his father, continued to uphold the ways of the Lord.

Faithfulness and Obedience: The verse highlights Jotham’s faithfulness and obedience to the Lord. Despite the challenges and temptations that often accompany leadership, Jotham made the conscious decision to follow the example of his father and walk in the ways of the Lord. This demonstrates the importance of continuity in righteousness and the influence of parents in shaping the faith of their children.

Influence of Godly Parenting: Jotham’s commitment to following the Lord can be attributed, at least in part, to the influence of his father Uzziah. Uzziah’s early years of faithful service to God likely impacted Jotham’s upbringing and understanding of the ways of the Lord. This highlights the vital role of godly parenting and the responsibility parents have in teaching their children to walk in righteousness.

Consequence of Righteous Leadership: The biblical account notes that Jotham acted in accordance with what was right in the sight of the Lord (2 Kings 15:34). While the text does not provide detailed information about the broader effects of his reign, his obedience is presented as commendable and serves as an illustration of godly leadership.

Application: As believers today, we can draw several lessons from this verse. First, the example we set as parents or mentors can greatly impact the spiritual journey of those under our care. Second, regardless of the actions of those around us, we have the choice to follow the Lord faithfully and do what is right in His sight. Lastly, our commitment to living righteously can have a positive influence on our surroundings, whether it be in our families, workplaces, or communities.

In conclusion, 2 Kings 15:34 teaches us about the faithfulness of Jotham, who followed in the footsteps of his father Uzziah by doing what was right in the sight of the Lord. This verse highlights the importance of godly parenting, the influence of righteous leadership, and the personal choice to follow God faithfully.
