2 Kings 16:5

Then Rezin king of Syria and Pekah son of Remaliah king of Israel came up to Jerusalem to war: and they besieged Ahaz, but could not overcome him.

2 Kings 16:5 (KJV)

This verse belongs to the reign of Ahaz, king of Judah. Ahaz was the son of Jotham and the father of Hezekiah. He ruled for sixteen years, from about 735 to 715 BC. Unlike his father, Ahaz was a wicked king who led Judah into idolatry and turned away from the Lord.

At that time, Rezin ruled Syria, also called Aram, and Pekah son of Remaliah ruled the northern kingdom of Israel. These two kings formed an alliance and came to Jerusalem to fight. They surrounded the city and tried to cut off its supplies, hoping to force Ahaz to surrender. The parallel account in Isaiah 7:1 confirms that they could not prevail against Jerusalem.

The words “could not overcome him” carry great weight. The same enemies had earlier defeated Ahaz and killed many of his people, as 2 Chronicles 28:5 records. Yet now they failed. This was not because Ahaz was faithful, for he was not. The Lord permitted this attack to discipline Ahaz, but He also limited its success. God’s protection does not depend on human worthiness; it rests on His own purposes and covenant promises.

The prophet Isaiah later told Ahaz not to fear these two kings, calling them “smoking firebrands” (Isaiah 7:4). The alliance wanted to replace Ahaz with their own chosen king, as Isaiah 7:5-6 reveals. But their plan failed because the Lord was in control. This event also prepared the way for Ahaz’s ungodly choice to seek help from Assyria instead of trusting God.

God can protect His people even when their leaders are weak or unfaithful. He may allow difficulties for correction, but He never abandons His covenant. When facing pressure from many sides, believers should turn to the Lord first, not to human alliances.

This siege reminds us that God’s sovereignty rules over kings, armies, and nations. His plans stand even when circumstances look hopeless. Trust Him to defend what belongs to Him.
