2 Kings 17:26

Listen to this article

“Wherefore they spake to the king of Assyria, saying, The nations which thou hast removed, and placed in the cities of Samaria, know not the manner of the God of the land: therefore he hath sent lions among them, and, behold, they slay them, because they know not the manner of the God of the land.”

Historical Context:2 Kings 17:26 is situated in the context of the Northern Kingdom of Israel after its conquest by the Assyrians. The Assyrian king had removed many Israelites from the land and resettled them in various cities within the Assyrian empire. In their place, the king sent people from other conquered nations to dwell in Samaria. The verse addresses the resulting predicament faced by these foreign settlers in Samaria.

  • Spiritual Ignorance:

The verse highlights the spiritual ignorance of the foreign inhabitants in Samaria. These individuals were unaware of the customs, practices, and religious beliefs of the God of the land, referring to the God of Israel. The Israelites had been entrusted with the knowledge of God’s commandments and worship, but these newcomers lacked that understanding. As a result, they were ill-equipped to honor and serve the God of the land.

Consequences of Ignorance:The lack of knowledge about the God of Israel had severe consequences for the foreign settlers. The verse mentions that God sent lions among them, and they were being slain by these animals. This is seen as a divine punishment for their ignorance and failure to acknowledge and honor the true God. It demonstrates that ignorance or rejection of God’s ways can lead to dire consequences.

The God of the Land:The phrase “the God of the land” emphasizes the importance of recognizing and worshiping the true God in the specific place where one resides. In this case, it refers to the God of Israel who had established His covenant with the Israelites in the land of Canaan. By neglecting to learn and follow the ways of the God of the land, the foreign settlers invited divine judgment upon themselves.

Application:

  • Importance of Knowing God:The verse serves as a reminder of the significance of knowing and understanding God’s ways. It highlights the importance of seeking knowledge about God and His commandments, which leads to a life that honors and pleases Him.
  • Consequences of Ignorance:Ignorance of God’s truth can have negative consequences in our lives. It is essential to study God’s Word and deepen our understanding of His character and will, so that we may live in alignment with His purposes.
  • c. Universal Application:While this verse specifically refers to the foreign settlers in Samaria, the principle of knowing and honoring God applies universally. It is incumbent upon all people, regardless of their background or nationality, to seek after the true God and His ways.

Remember that a comprehensive study of the Bible involves considering the broader context, related passages, and consulting reliable commentaries or studying with a knowledgeable mentor or group.
