2 Kings 17:27

Listen to this article

“Then the king of Assyria commanded, saying, Carry thither one of the priests whom ye brought from thence; and let them go and dwell there, and let him teach them the manner of the God of the land.”

Context:In this passage, we find the aftermath of the Assyrian conquest of the northern kingdom of Israel. The Assyrians had exiled the Israelites and brought foreign people to inhabit the land. Due to the attacks by lions, they feared the wrath of God, whom they did not worship. So, they sought guidance on how to appease this God.

Meaning and Lessons:

The Consequences of Disobedience:The exile of the northern kingdom of Israel was a result of their disobedience and idolatry. God had warned them through His prophets about the consequences of turning away from Him and worshiping false gods. This verse serves as a reminder that disobedience has severe consequences.

God’s Sovereignty:Despite the Israelites being taken captive by Assyria, God’s sovereign plan was still at work. The king of Assyria commanded that one of the Israelite priests be brought back to teach the foreign inhabitants about the God of the land. Even in the midst of judgment, God’s purpose and plan for His people could not be thwarted.

God’s Desire for All Nations:The king of Assyria recognized the need to learn about the God of the land to appease Him. This demonstrates that God’s desire is not limited to the Israelites alone but extends to all nations. He desires to be known and worshiped by people from every tribe, tongue, and nation.

The Role of Teachers:The king commanded that one of the Israelite priests be sent to teach the people about the God of the land. This emphasizes the importance of teachers in instructing others about God’s ways. It highlights the responsibility of those who have knowledge of God’s Word to share it with others, leading them to a true understanding of who God is and how to worship Him.

God’s Revelation:The verse mentions that the priest was to teach the people the “manner of the God of the land.” This implies that there was a specific way in which God desired to be worshiped, and it needed to be communicated to the foreign inhabitants. Similarly, today, as believers, we are called to teach others the ways of God, helping them understand His character, His will, and the principles of His Word.

Application:

  • Obedience:We should heed God’s warnings and instructions, avoiding the path of disobedience that leads to negative consequences.
  • God’s Sovereignty:Even in difficult circumstances, we can trust that God is in control and working out His purposes.
  • Sharing God’s Word:Like the priest in this passage, we should be willing to share the knowledge of God with others, helping them understand His ways and leading them into a deeper relationship with Him.
  • Worship:We should seek to understand and follow the specific manner in which God desires to be worshiped, aligning our lives with His revealed will.
