2 Kings 19:32

Posted on 18 May at 11:40

“Therefore thus saith the Lord concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come into this city, nor shoot an arrow there, nor come before it with shield, nor cast a bank against it.”

This verse is part of a historical account found in 2 Kings 19, which recounts the events during the reign of King Hezekiah of Judah and the Assyrian invasion led by King Sennacherib.

Historical Context:In the preceding verses (2 Kings 19:8-31), King Sennacherib of Assyria had sent a threatening letter to King Hezekiah, boasting about his military might and taunting the people of Judah. The Assyrian army had already conquered many nations and was now planning to attack Jerusalem, the capital city of Judah.

  • God’s Assurance:

In 2 Kings 19:32, the Lord speaks through the prophet Isaiah, assuring King Hezekiah of His divine intervention in the face of the Assyrian threat. The verse starts with the phrase “Therefore thus saith the Lord concerning the king of Assyria.” God is directly addressing the situation and making a proclamation.

Divine Protection:The verse continues by declaring that the king of Assyria will not be able to enter Jerusalem, shoot an arrow there, set up a shield against it, or build a siege mound. This means that God will prevent the Assyrians from conquering the city and causing harm to its inhabitants.

Fulfillment of God’s Word:God’s promise of protection came to pass. In the subsequent verses, we read how the angel of the Lord struck down 185,000 Assyrian soldiers during the night, leading to Sennacherib’s retreat and eventual death (2 Kings 19:35-37).

Spiritual Lessons:

  • Trust in God’s promises:This passage emphasises the importance of trusting in God’s word, even in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges. King Hezekiah could find hope and confidence in God’s assurance of protection.
  • The power of prayer:Prior to God’s intervention, King Hezekiah had fervently prayed to God, seeking His help and deliverance. This demonstrates the significance of prayer in seeking God’s intervention in times of trouble.
  • God’s sovereignty and faithfulness:The events surrounding this verse highlight God’s sovereignty over the affairs of nations and His faithfulness to fulfill His promises. The Assyrian army, despite their power and threats, could not prevail against God’s divine protection.

In conclusion, 2 Kings 19:32 showcases God’s assurance of protection over Jerusalem and His faithfulness to fulfill His promises. It serves as a reminder to trust in God’s word, rely on prayer, and recognise God’s sovereignty and faithfulness in all circumstances.
