For out of Ierusalem shall goe forth a remnant, and they that escape out of mount Zion: the zeale of the Lord of hostes shall doe this. 2 Kings 19:31 (KJV)

This verse is part of a historical account recorded in the book of 2 Kings, specifically in chapter 19. This verse is part of a historical account recorded in the book of Isaiah, specifically in chapter 37, which parallels the narrative found in 2 Kings 19. The chapter tells the story of King Hezekiah’s reign in Judah and the Assyrian invasion led by King Sennacherib. Sennacherib’s army had already conquered many cities and was now threatening Jerusalem, the capital of Judah. In this particular verse, God is delivering a message of hope and reassurance to King Hezekiah through the prophet Isaiah. The verse emphasizes three main points:

The Remnant: God promises that a remnant, a small surviving group, will come out of Jerusalem and the mount of Zion. This remnant refers to those who remain faithful to God and are protected and delivered by Him in the midst of adversity. It signifies God’s grace and mercy in preserving a faithful remnant even in the face of imminent danger.

Divine Zeal: The verse speaks of the zeal of the LORD of hosts. Zeal implies intense passion or fervor. Here, it refers to God’s unwavering commitment and determination to protect His people and uphold His promises. Despite the Assyrian threat, God’s zeal is portrayed as the driving force behind the deliverance of His chosen people. It demonstrates God’s faithfulness and dedication to His covenant.

God’s Intervention: The verse assures that it is the zeal of the LORD of hosts that will accomplish the deliverance of the remnant. It emphasizes that the survival of the people does not depend on human strength or strategies but on God’s intervention. He alone has the power to rescue and protect His people from their enemies.

Overall, 2 Kings 19:31 serves as a reminder of God’s sovereignty and faithfulness to His people. Overall, Isaiah 37:31 serves as a reminder of God’s sovereignty and faithfulness to His people. It highlights the assurance of His divine protection and deliverance, even in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges. It encourages believers to trust in God’s zeal and rely on His power to sustain them through difficult times. This verse can also be seen as a foreshadowing of the ultimate deliverance found in Jesus Christ. The remnant spoken of here represents those who find salvation through faith in Jesus. Through His sacrificial death and resurrection, Jesus delivers believers from the power of sin and provides eternal life. Just as God protected the remnant in ancient times, He continues to rescue and redeem His people today.
