2 Kings 20:1

Listen to this article

“In those days was Hezekiah sick unto death. And the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz came to him, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Set thine house in order; for thou shalt die, and not live.”

Context:The book of 2 Kings records the history of the kings of Israel and Judah. In chapter 20, we find King Hezekiah of Judah falling severely ill. The prophet Isaiah brings a message from the Lord to Hezekiah, informing him of his impending death.

Hezekiah’s Sickness:Hezekiah, one of the righteous kings of Judah, became ill to the point of death. Sickness and death are common experiences in the human condition, affecting both the righteous and the unrighteous. This verse reminds us that even godly individuals are not exempt from physical ailments and mortality.

The Prophet Isaiah:Prophet Isaiah, the son of Amoz, is a significant figure in the Old Testament. He was a prophet during the reigns of several kings in Judah, including Hezekiah. In this instance, Isaiah delivers a specific message from God to the king regarding his illness.

God’s Warning:Through Isaiah, the Lord instructs Hezekiah to “set thine house in order.” This phrase carries the meaning of getting one’s affairs in order, making necessary arrangements, and preparing for death. It is a reminder to Hezekiah that his time on earth is coming to an end, and he should prepare himself spiritually and practically for his departure.

Hezekiah’s Response (Further Study):The subsequent verses (2 Kings 20:2-11) describe Hezekiah’s response to the Lord’s message. He turns to the wall, prays, and weeps bitterly. God hears his prayer and grants him fifteen more years of life. This incident demonstrates God’s mercy and grace in response to genuine repentance and prayer.
