2 Kings 20:2

Posted on 18 May at 11:18
Listen to this article

Then hee turned his face to the wall, and prayed vnto the Lord, saying; 2 Kings 20:2 (KJV)

This verse occurs in the narrative of King Hezekiah’s severe illness and his earnest prayer for healing. Hezekiah, a righteous king of Judah who sought the Lord and instituted religious reforms, receives a dire prophetic warning from Isaiah that he will not recover. In response, he turns his face toward the wall and pours out his heart to God.

Seeking God in Times of Need

When Hezekiah fell ill, his action of turning toward the wall and praying demonstrates a deep dependence on God and confidence in the power of prayer. It reminds believers that in moments of crisis we should turn to God, laying aside distractions and earnestly seeking His help.

Faith and Persistence in Prayer

Hezekiah’s prayer is marked by steadfast faith despite a bleak prognosis. He does not abandon hope but persistently petitions the Lord for intervention and healing. This underscores the importance of unwavering faith and continual prayer, trusting in God’s sovereignty even when circumstances appear unfavorable.

The Power of Intercession

As king, Hezekiah bears responsibility not only for himself but also for his nation. His personal supplication reflects the broader principle of interceding for others. By bringing his own need before God, he models the practice of presenting the needs of family, community, and nation before the Almighty, trusting that God’s mercy will flow outward.

God’s Response to Genuine Prayer

God hears Hezekiah’s cry and grants him fifteen additional years of life, displaying mercy and compassion. This episode affirms that sincere, heartfelt prayer can elicit a divine response, encouraging believers to approach God with humility and genuine devotion.

The Importance of Turning to God

The physical act of turning toward the wall symbolizes a deliberate shift away from worldly distractions toward focused communion with God. It serves as a reminder to fix our gaze on the Lord, seeking His guidance, comfort, and provision in every season.

Practical Application

Develop a habit of seeking God through prayer in both need and blessing. Cultivate persistence and faith, trusting that God answers according to His perfect timing. Set aside moments of solitude to turn away from distractions and commune with God. Regularly intercede for family, friends, community, and nation. Acknowledge God’s sovereignty in all circumstances, entrusting your health and well‑being to His care. Continual study and reflection on Scripture, guided by the Holy Spirit, deepen insight and personal application.
