And Isaiah said, Take a lumpe of figs. And they tooke and layd it on the boile, and he recouered. 2 Kings 20:7 (KJV)

Context: In 2 Kings 20 King Hezekiah falls gravely ill. The prophet Isaiah first tells him that death is imminent, but after Hezekiah’s heartfelt prayer and tears God sends Isaiah back with the promise that Hezekiah’s life will be extended by fifteen years. As a miraculous sign of this promise the shadow on the sundial moves backward ten degrees.

Healing through a Fig Poultice:

Isaiah instructs the people to take a lump of figs and apply it to the king’s boil. The simple act of placing the fig poultice on the wound becomes the means through which God brings healing. The passage reminds us that God often works through ordinary, natural means as well as supernatural power.

Symbolism:

The figs serve as a tangible sign of God’s mercy. In the ancient world figs were valued for their medicinal properties, and God’s choice of this remedy underscores that His power is not limited to spectacular miracles but can be manifested through everyday resources.

Faith and Obedience:

Hezekiah’s trust is evident in his prayer and tears, and the people’s obedience in following Isaiah’s instruction is essential to the fulfillment of the promise. Their willingness to act, even when the method seems unconventional, highlights the importance of obeying God’s word.

God’s Sovereignty:

The recovery is ultimately a testimony to God’s sovereign ability to heal and restore. It is not the figs themselves that effect the cure, but God’s power working through them. The extension of Hezekiah’s life demonstrates God’s compassion and His readiness to answer sincere prayer.

Conclusion:

2 Kings 20:7 shows that God can bring healing through both natural and supernatural avenues. The passage encourages believers to place their faith in God’s sovereignty, to obey His instructions, and to trust that He can work beyond human expectations to bring restoration.
