2 Kings 20:8

Posted on 18 May at 11:41
Listen to this article

“And Hezekiah said unto Isaiah, What shall be the sign that the Lord will heal me, and that I shall go up into the house of the Lord the third day?”

Context:Before we delve into this specific verse, it’s important to understand the context of the passage. Hezekiah was the king of Judah, and during his reign, he fell severely ill. The prophet Isaiah came to him and delivered a message from God that he would not recover and would die. However, upon hearing this, Hezekiah turned to the Lord in prayer and wept bitterly. God then sent Isaiah back to Hezekiah to deliver a new message of healing and an extension of his life by fifteen years.

Seeking confirmation:In 2 Kings 20:8, we see Hezekiah’s response to Isaiah’s message of healing. He asks for a sign that the Lord will indeed heal him and that he will be able to go to the house of the Lord on the third day. Hezekiah wanted assurance and confirmation from God, perhaps to strengthen his faith and trust in the Lord’s promises.

Trust in God’s promises:Hezekiah’s request for a sign reveals his desire to have unwavering faith in God’s word. Though he had received a message of healing from Isaiah, he sought confirmation to bolster his confidence. It demonstrates his reliance on God’s promises and his longing for reassurance in the midst of a challenging situation.

God’s response:In the following verses, God granted Hezekiah’s request for a sign and provided a miraculous confirmation. He made the shadow on the stairway of Ahaz go backward ten steps, indicating that Hezekiah’s life would be extended and the promise of healing would be fulfilled.

  • Seek God’s confirmation:Hezekiah’s example encourages us to seek confirmation from God when we are facing difficult circumstances or waiting for His promises to be fulfilled. It is not wrong to ask God for signs or seek His guidance, as long as we do so with humility and a sincere heart.
  • Strengthening our faith:Sometimes, we may face doubts or uncertainties, even after receiving promises from God. In those moments, it is essential to turn to Him in prayer, just as Hezekiah did. God understands our struggles and is willing to provide the confirmation and assurance we need to strengthen our faith.
  • Trusting God’s timing:Hezekiah’s request to go to the house of the Lord on the third day also indicates his desire to worship God. It reminds us of the importance of patiently waiting for God’s timing and not rushing ahead of His plans. God’s timing is perfect, and when we wait on Him, we can experience His blessings and faithfulness in due time.

2 Kings 20:8 offers valuable insights into Hezekiah’s response to God’s promise of healing and his desire for confirmation. Through this passage, we are reminded of the importance of seeking God’s assurance, trusting in His promises, and patiently waiting for His perfect timing.
