2 Kings 9:1

“And Elisha the prophet called one of the children of the prophets, and said unto him, Gird up thy loins, and take this box of oil in thine hand, and go to Ramoth-gilead: 2 Kings 9:1 (KJV)”

In the preceding chapters, the prophet Elijah is taken up to heaven in a whirlwind, and Elisha, his chosen successor, receives a double portion of Elijah’s spirit. Elisha’s Commission:In 2 Kings 9:1, we see Elisha giving a specific command to one of the children of the prophets. The phrase “gird up thy loins” refers to the practice of tying up one’s loose garments to prepare for action or a journey. Symbolism of the Oil:The box of oil mentioned in the verse symbolizes an anointing, which was a common practice in the Old Testament for consecrating individuals for a particular purpose. Elisha sends the prophet to this city as part of God’s plan to bring judgment upon the wicked rulers of Israel.

Jehu’s Anointing:In the following verses, the prophet follows Elisha’s instructions and anoints Jehu as the king of Israel. This anointing is a significant event in the history of Israel as it marks the beginning of a new era. Jehu carries out God’s judgment against the house of Ahab, fulfilling the prophecy given by Elijah.

First, it reminds us of God’s sovereignty in raising up leaders and executing His plans. God used prophets like Elisha to bring about His purposes in Israel. Second, it emphasises the importance of obedience to God’s specific instructions. The prophet had to follow Elisha’s command precisely. Lastly, it demonstrates God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises. The anointing of Jehu was a fulfilment of God’s word through Elijah.
