2 Kings 9:6
And hee arose, and went into the house, and hee powred the oyle on his head, and said vnto him, Thus sayth the Lord God of Israel, I haue anoynted thee king ouer the people of the Lord, euen ouer Israel. 2 Kings 9:6 (KJV)
Context: To understand the significance of this verse we must examine its setting. Prior to this event the prophet Elijah had been taken up to heaven and Elisha had received the mantle of prophethood. The LORD commanded Elisha to send a messenger to anoint Jehu as the next king of Israel and to execute judgment upon the house of Ahab (2 Kings 9:1‑3).
Anointing: Anointing with oil was a significant Old‑Testament ritual, symbolising the outpouring of God’s Spirit and the consecration of a person for a specific purpose. In this case a young man sent by Elisha carried out the LORD’s command to anoint Jehu as the new king over Israel. The anointing marked Jehu as God’s chosen instrument to bring judgment upon the wicked and to fulfill the prophecy concerning the house of Ahab (see 1 Kings 21:17‑24).
God’s message: After the messenger poured the oil on Jehu’s head, the proclamation was spoken: “Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I have anointed thee king over the people of the LORD, even over Israel.” This declaration emphasized that Jehu’s authority and position as king were established by God Himself. It signified that Jehu would act as God’s instrument to execute divine judgment on the house of Ahab for their idolatry, injustice, and oppression.
Divine commission: Through this anointing and the message delivered by the messenger, Jehu received a divine commission. He was entrusted with the responsibility of carrying out God’s judgment upon the house of Ahab, which involved removing the wicked Queen Jezebel and exterminating the descendants of Ahab (2 Kings 9:7‑10). This commission would bring about significant political and spiritual changes in the kingdom of Israel.
