2 Kings 9:5
“And when he came, behold, the captains of the host were sitting; and he said, I have an errand to thee, O captain. And Jehu said, Unto which of all us? And he said, To thee, O captain.”
Historical Context:To understand the significance of this verse, it is important to have some background information. At this point in the biblical narrative, Jehoram, the son of Ahab and Jezebel, was the king of Israel. The prophet Elisha had sent one of the sons of the prophets to anoint Jehu as the next king over Israel and to deliver a message from God.
The Anointing of Jehu:Prior to this verse, the young prophet had poured oil on Jehu’s head and declared him the next king of Israel (2 Kings 9:1-3). The act of anointing with oil symbolised God’s chosen person for a specific task or office. Jehu was anointed as a sign that God had appointed him to execute judgment on the house of Ahab.
Jehu’s Response:When the prophet approaches Jehu, he addresses him as “captain,” acknowledging his military position. Jehu, however, does not know the purpose of the prophet’s visit and asks, “Unto which of all us?” He wants to clarify if the message is intended for him specifically or for someone else.
God’s Message to Jehu:The prophet confirms that the message is indeed for Jehu. The following verses reveal that Jehu is tasked with destroying the house of Ahab, including King Jehoram, Jezebel, and all of Ahab’s descendants. Jehu was to execute divine judgment upon the wickedness that had characterised the reign of Ahab and Jezebel, who had introduced idol worship and led the nation into apostasy.
Application and Lessons:The story of Jehu serves as a reminder of God’s justice and judgment. It demonstrates that God holds rulers accountable for their actions and intervenes in human affairs to accomplish His purposes. Additionally, it highlights the importance of obedience to God’s commands, as Jehu was chosen to carry out a difficult and weighty task. It prompts us to reflect on our own willingness to follow God’s instructions, even if they may be challenging or unpopular.
God’s Faithfulness:Despite the severity of the judgment upon the house of Ahab, God’s faithfulness can be seen through the fulfilment of His prophetic word. Jehu accomplished the task he was given, and the dynasty of Ahab was completely wiped out, in accordance with the word of the Lord.
