2 Kings 14 recounts the reign of King Amaziah of Judah. Amaziah began his reign at the age of 25 and reigned for 29 years in Jerusalem. He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, but not with a fully devoted heart.
The chapter highlights some key events during Amaziah's rule. He sought justice by executing those who had assassinated his father, but spared their children according to the law of Moses. Amaziah then led his army to defeat the Edomites, capturing the city of Sela and renaming it Joktheel.
However, despite these victories, Amaziah's pride got the better of him. He challenged King Joash of Israel to battle, despite Joash's warning that it would lead to his downfall. Amaziah was defeated and captured by Joash, who then plundered Jerusalem and took valuable items from the temple and palace.
This chapter showcases the consequences of Amaziah's arrogance and lack of wholehearted devotion to God. It serves as a reminder of the importance of humility and following the Lord faithfully.
