“Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished”

Context:The book of 2 Peter was written by the apostle Peter, likely towards the end of his life. In this letter, Peter addresses false teachers and encourages believers to grow in their faith and knowledge of Jesus Christ. In 2 Peter 3, he focuses on the second coming of Christ and the final judgment.

“Whereby the world that then was”: This phrase refers to the world that existed before the flood during the time of Noah. Peter refers to the historical event of the great flood that occurred as a judgment from God.

“Being overflowed with water”: The world during Noah’s time was filled with wickedness and corruption, and God decided to bring judgment upon it by flooding the entire earth. The floodwaters covered the entire land, causing the destruction of all living beings except those who were saved in the ark.

“Perished”: The flood resulted in the destruction of all life on earth, except for Noah, his family, and the animals that were on the ark. The judgment of the flood was a significant event in biblical history, illustrating God’s righteousness and judgment against sin.

  • God’s judgment:The account of the flood demonstrates that God is a just and righteous judge. He punishes sin and wickedness while preserving those who are faithful to Him. It serves as a reminder that God’s judgment is inevitable and that we should live in righteousness and obedience to Him.
  • The consequences of sin:The flood serves as a reminder of the consequences of sin. The wickedness of humanity reached such a level that God’s judgment was necessary. This event shows us the seriousness of sin and the need for repentance and turning to God.
  • God’s faithfulness:While God brought judgment onto the world, He also demonstrated His faithfulness to His chosen people. Noah found favour in the eyes of the Lord and was given instructions to build the ark. God preserved Noah, his family, and the animals through the flood, showing His faithfulness to His promises.
  • The importance of preparedness:In this passage, Peter uses the historical event of the flood as a reminder for believers to be prepared for the second coming of Christ. Just as the people in Noah’s time were caught off guard by the flood, the return of Jesus will catch many people unaware. We are encouraged to live in anticipation of His coming, remaining faithful and diligent in our walk with Him.

In conclusion, 2 Peter 3:6 reflects on the historical event of the flood during Noah’s time. It emphasises God’s judgment against sin and wickedness, the consequences of disobedience, and the importance of being prepared for the second coming of Christ.
