2 Samuel 13:9

Posted on 28 Jan at 09:11

“But when she had brought them unto him to eat, he took hold of her and said unto her, Come lie with me, my sister.”

Context:In this chapter, we find the account of Amnon, one of David’s sons, who develops an unhealthy obsession with his half-sister, Tamar. Amnon’s desire for Tamar grows to the point where he becomes sick with longing. Seeking advice, he confides in a friend, Jonadab, who suggests a deceitful plan to help him fulfill his desires. Following Jonadab’s advice, Amnon pretends to be ill and requests Tamar’s presence, asking her to prepare food for him.

Study:

  • Respect for Family Relationships:The verse highlights a grave violation of the sacred bond between siblings. Amnon, driven by lust, approaches Tamar with an inappropriate request. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining respect for familial relationships and boundaries set by God.
  • Consequences of Unchecked Desires:Amnon’s lustful desire and his decision to act on it result in a tragic outcome. This event not only brings pain and humiliation to Tamar but also leads to the eventual demise of Amnon himself. It serves as a cautionary tale, reminding us of the destructive consequences that can arise from unchecked and immoral desires.
  • The Role of Deception:The influence of Amnon’s friend, Jonadab, should not be overlooked. Jonadab’s counsel reveals the power of bad company and the danger of seeking advice from those who do not uphold godly principles. It is essential to surround ourselves with wise and godly individuals who can guide us in making righteous choices.
  • Upholding God’s Standards:This passage underscores the importance of upholding God’s moral standards in our relationships and interactions. It serves as a reminder that obedience to God’s commands and respect for His design for human relationships are crucial in maintaining peace, harmony, and justice within families and society as a whole.

Application:

  • Respect and Honor:Let us value and honor our familial relationships, treating our family members with respect, love, and care. Let us also be mindful of setting appropriate boundaries within these relationships.
  • Guarding Against Temptations:We must recognize the power of unchecked desires and guard ourselves against immoral thoughts and actions. By seeking God’s guidance and the support of wise and godly individuals, we can resist the temptations that can lead to destructive consequences.
  • Seeking Godly Counsel:It is essential to surround ourselves with people who uphold godly principles and values. Seeking advice from those who share our commitment to living according to God’s Word can help guide us in making wise decisions.
  • Upholding God’s Standards:We should strive to live in alignment with God’s moral standards in all areas of our lives. By doing so, we contribute to the establishment of peace, justice, and righteousness in our families and communities.
