2 Samuel 18:23

But howsoever, said he, let me run. And he said unto him, Run. Then Ahimaaz ran by the way of the plain, and overran Cushi.

2 Samuel 18:23 (KJV)

The battle in the forest of Ephraim had just ended. Absalom’s rebellion against his father, King David, was crushed, and David’s army, led by Joab, had won the victory. In this tense moment, Ahimaaz, the son of Zadok the priest, was eager to carry the news to the king. Joab had already warned him in verse 22 that he had no tidings ready, yet Ahimaaz still insisted on running.

Ahimaaz’s words, “But howsoever, said he, let me run,” show his determination. Joab’s reply, “Run,” grants permission, and Ahimaaz immediately sets off. The text notes that he ran “by the way of the plain,” a route that was easier and faster, though longer, and he “overran Cushi,” who had taken the shorter but more difficult mountain path. This detail highlights Ahimaaz’s zeal and practical wisdom: he chose the most efficient way to fulfill his mission.

Ahimaaz’s role as a messenger recalls the importance of faithful service in Scripture. His eagerness to bring news to the king mirrors the believer’s call to share the good news of God’s work with urgency and dedication. The contrast between the two runners also illustrates that diligence and wisdom in choosing one’s path can lead to success in serving God and others.

Ahimaaz’s example encourages believers to serve with enthusiasm and a sense of urgency. His willingness to go the extra mile, even when the task seemed unnecessary, challenges us to be proactive in our responsibilities. We can ask ourselves: Are we eager to serve God and others, even when the outcome is uncertain? Do we choose the most effective way to accomplish what God has called us to do?

Ahimaaz’s run reminds us that faithful service often requires swift, decisive action. His loyalty to the king points to our own devotion to Christ, the King of kings. As we consider his example, we are invited to serve with the same passion and commitment, trusting that God sees and honors our diligence.
