2 Samuel 19:40
Then the king went on to Gilgal, and Chimham went on with him: and all the people of Judah conducted the king, and also half the people of Israel.
2 Samuel 19:40 (KJV)
Context
This verse follows the civil war between King David and his son Absalom. Absalom had rebelled and sought the throne, but his forces were defeated. Now David is returning to Jerusalem, and the nation is beginning to heal.
Gilgal was a significant place near the Jordan River. Under Joshua, Israel first entered the Promised Land there, and the people were circumcised and memorial stones were set up (Joshua 4:19-20). David’s journey through Gilgal connects his return to Israel’s earlier history of entering the land under God’s guidance.
Meaning
Chimham is the son of Barzillai the Gileadite. Barzillai had helped David during his exile, providing food and support. Because of his old age, Barzillai declined David’s invitation to live at court, but he sent his son Chimham to accompany the king. This act shows loyalty and a desire to remain connected to David’s restored reign.
The verse says that “all the people of Judah conducted the king, and also half the people of Israel.” Judah, David’s own tribe, fully escorted him. Only half of Israel did so. This division reflects the lingering effects of Absalom’s rebellion, as some northern tribes had supported the rebel. The Hebrew word for “half” can also mean “a part,” suggesting a partial contingent rather than a precise half.
Biblical connections
The mixed response of the people shows that reconciliation was not yet complete. Judah had come to meet David at the Jordan (2 Samuel 19:15), and they escorted him onward. The participation of half of Israel signals a step toward unity, but not full harmony. This gradual healing is a recurring theme in David’s later reign.
Application
This verse encourages believers to show loyalty and support to those whom God has placed in leadership, even after times of conflict. Barzillai’s example teaches that practical help and faithful service are valuable, even when age or circumstance prevents full participation. Chimham’s presence reminds us that the next generation can carry forward the loyalty of their parents.
Reflection
God works through imperfect and divided situations to restore His people. The journey to Gilgal is a reminder that He leads His people through places of historical significance, calling them to remember His past faithfulness. As David returned, so God invites His people to move forward in unity, trusting Him to heal divisions and restore peace.
