2 Samuel 2:6

And now the Lord shew kindness and truth unto you: and I also will requite you this kindness, because ye have done this thing.

2 Samuel 2:6 (KJV)

David spoke these words to the men of Jabesh-gilead after the death of King Saul and his sons in battle against the Philistines. Those men had risked danger to recover the bodies of Saul and his sons and give them a proper burial, an act of loyalty and courage. David, now king, sent messengers to thank them and to bless them.

David prays that the Lord would show “kindness and truth” to these men. The Hebrew word for kindness, chesed, means loyal, covenant love. The word for truth, emet, means faithfulness and reliability. Together they describe true, substantial, and faithful kindness from God. David also promises, “I also will requite you this kindness.” He commits himself to repay their good deed, not just with words but with action at a proper time.

This act of honoring the dead is later recorded in 2 Samuel 21:12-14, where David ensures the bones of Saul and Jonathan are buried properly. That later event shows that David kept his promise to honor those who had shown loyalty. The principle of reciprocating kindness is consistent with the teaching in Proverbs 19:17, where kindness to the needy is seen as lending to the Lord.

God sees and values acts of kindness and faithfulness, especially those done for the honor of others, even at personal risk. Believers are encouraged to acknowledge good deeds, bless those who do them, and commit to reciprocate kindness. This builds a culture of mutual care and gratitude. Acts of respect and remembrance, such as honoring the dead, help create a strong, supportive community.

David’s example teaches us to be people who both show kindness and truth and who honor those who do the same. In a time of national upheaval, his gracious response set a tone of honor and reconciliation. We can ask ourselves: how can we show loyal kindness today, and how can we faithfully repay those who have helped us?
