When he was removed out of the highway, all the people went on after Joab, to pursue after Sheba the son of Bichri.

Context

This verse continues the account of Sheba’s rebellion against King David. Joab had just killed his cousin Amasa, whom David had appointed as army commander in Joab’s place (2 Samuel 20:4-10). Amasa’s body lay in the highway, and the troops stopped to stare. A soldier moved the body into a field and covered it. Once the obstacle was removed, the people followed Joab again to pursue Sheba.

Meaning

The removal of the body was not an act of honor but of expediency. It cleared the road so the army could continue its mission. The people did not stop to mourn Amasa or question Joab’s actions; they simply resumed the pursuit. This shows how a physical hindrance was cleared to restore forward momentum. The verse also reveals that Joab, despite his treacherous act, remained the effective leader whom the people followed.

Sheba’s rebellion reminds us of the consequences of disobedience. Absalom’s rebellion had already caused turmoil and death, yet Sheba pursued his own agenda, leading to more conflict. Consider what obstacles in your life keep you from following Christ wholeheartedly. Are there “bodies“—past hurts, pride, or unforgiveness—that you need to remove? The people’s singular focus on the mission challenges us to keep our eyes on God’s purposes. Even when human leaders fail, God’s plan continues. Trust Him to clear the way and give you strength to pursue righteousness and unity.
