2 Samuel 22:21
The Lord rewarded me according to my righteousness: according to the cleanness of my hands hath he recompensed me.
2 Samuel 22:21 (KJV)
Context
This verse belongs to David’s song of thanksgiving after the Lord delivered him from his enemies, including King Saul. The song appears again as Psalm 18, with only small differences. David looks back over his life and sees God’s faithful care in every danger and victory.
Meaning
David says the Lord rewarded him according to his righteousness. This does not mean David was sinless. He knew his own failures well. Rather, righteousness here means his faithful devotion to God and his determination to follow God’s commands. The cleanness of his hands points to his integrity and moral purity. He kept himself from unjust actions, deceit, and corruption. His hands were clean because he did not reach out to take what was wrong.
David’s words show his understanding of God’s justice. God sees every action and motive, and He responds to each person according to what they have done. This is not salvation by works. It is the righteous judgment of God in the life of a believer who walks in obedience.
Biblical connections
David repeats this same claim in verse 25, where he says the Lord recompensed him according to his righteousness and his cleanness in God’s sight. The surrounding verses (22-24) explain what he means: he kept the Lord’s ways, did not turn from God, had God’s laws before him, and was blameless before Him. The parallel passage in Psalm 18:20 confirms the same teaching. Also, 1 Samuel 26:23 connects to this idea, as David there declares that the Lord rewards every man’s righteousness and faithfulness.
Application
This verse reminds believers that their actions carry weight. God is not indifferent to how they live. He sees the hidden motives and the public deeds. The call is to pursue integrity, faithfulness, and obedience, not to earn salvation, but to live in a way that honors God. Clean hands and a pure heart are not optional extras for the believer; they are the natural fruit of a life submitted to God.
At the same time, no one can claim perfect righteousness on their own. The believer’s standing before God rests on faith in Jesus Christ, who alone is truly righteous. Yet this does not remove the call to live rightly. Instead, it gives the believer both the example and the power to walk in obedience.
Reflection
David’s confidence came from a life that, despite its flaws, was marked by genuine devotion. He did not pretend to be perfect, but he did pursue God wholeheartedly. His song invites every believer to examine their own walk. Are their hands clean? Is their heart set on God’s ways? The same God who rewarded David sees and knows each life. He is just, and He is faithful to those who trust and obey Him.
