2 Samuel 22:4

I will call on the Lord, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.

2 Samuel 22:4 (KJV)

This verse belongs to a song of thanksgiving David sang after the Lord delivered him from all his enemies, including King Saul. The same song appears in Psalm 18, where this verse is Psalm 18:3. Just before this, David calls the Lord his rock, fortress, and deliverer (2 Samuel 22:2-3). That picture of God as a strong refuge explains David’s confidence when he says he will call on the Lord.

David’s words “I will call on the Lord” show his deliberate choice to depend on God’s strength and wisdom. This is not a casual request; it is an act of humility and trust. David knows he cannot save himself, but he believes God can. When he says the Lord is “worthy to be praised,” he declares that God alone deserves honor and worship because of His greatness, holiness, and faithfulness. The result is deliverance: “so shall I be saved from mine enemies.” David speaks from past experience of God’s rescue, and he trusts God for future help as well.

The pattern is clear: call on the Lord, acknowledge His worthiness, and receive salvation. This same pattern appears throughout David’s life. In Psalm 18:3, the same words are repeated, showing this song was a lasting testimony. The verse also connects to the broader teaching that God hears those who call on Him in faith and delivers them according to His perfect plan.

Believers today can follow David’s example. When facing difficulties, we can call on the Lord in prayer, trusting that He is able to save. Praising God for His worthiness shifts our focus from our problems to His greatness. This does not mean every trouble will disappear immediately, but it means we can have confidence that God is faithful and will act in His timing.

David’s song reminds us that deliverance begins with a heart that turns to God. His words are not only a record of the past but also a promise for the present. As we call on the Lord and praise Him, we join David in declaring that God is worthy and that He alone is our salvation.
