2 Samuel 22:5

When the waves of death compassed me, the floods of ungodly men made me afraid;

2 Samuel 22:5 (KJV)

2 Samuel 22 records David’s song of praise after God delivered him from all his enemies, including Saul. This chapter closely parallels Psalm 18. In verse 5, David uses vivid imagery: he was surrounded by the “waves of death” and the “floods of ungodly men.” These pictures show danger overwhelming him like a raging sea, while wicked adversaries surged against him like a flood.

The “waves of death” suggest being trapped in a tumultuous ocean of imminent danger. The “floods of ungodly men” highlight the number and moral corruption of his opponents. David honestly admits he was afraid. This fear is not a lack of faith but a truthful recognition of his severe situation. His honest fear precedes his cry to the Lord, showing that acknowledging danger is the first step toward seeking divine help.

The parallel passage in Psalm 18:4 uses “sorrows of death” instead of “waves of death,” but the meaning is similar. Some study Bibles connect this language to Psalm 116:3 and Acts 2:24, where the cords of death surround the righteous. Yet the primary focus here is David’s personal testimony of distress and God’s deliverance. The imagery of waves and floods emphasizes the uncontrollable power of the threats, contrasting with God’s sovereign ability to save.

David turned to God as his refuge. When we face overwhelming trials or wickedness, we are called to trust in God’s deliverance. Recognizing God’s faithfulness leads to gratitude and praise, just as David’s song expresses thankfulness. This verse offers three practical lessons. First, trust God in danger, relying on Him as the source of safety. Second, thank God for every deliverance, whether from literal enemies or figurative “waves of death.” Third, seek continual refuge in God’s presence, where His peace sustains us. 2 Samuel 22:5 reminds us that God remains a reliable source of protection, comfort, and guidance for all who earnestly seek Him.
