And Abishai the brother of Ioab, the sonne of Zeruiah, was chiefe among three, and he lift vp his speare against three hundred, and slew them, and had the name among three. 2 Samuel 23:18 (KJV)

The book of 2 Samuel records the life and reign of King David, one of the most prominent figures in the Old Testament. This verse belongs to the section often called David’s Mighty Men, which highlights the exploits and valor of David’s most loyal and courageous warriors.

Abishai was the brother of Joab and the son of Zeruiah. Joab, his brother, served as the commander of David’s army, and Abishai was a key member of David’s inner circle and one of the three most distinguished warriors among David’s mighty men.

2 Samuel 23:18 emphasizes Abishai’s incredible bravery and skill in battle. It records that he single‑handedly faced an overwhelming number of enemies—three hundred in total—and defeated them with his spear. This extraordinary feat exemplifies his exceptional courage and remarkable military abilities.

The verse also notes that Abishai “had the name among three,” indicating that he belonged to an elite subgroup of three warriors. The number three often denotes completeness, and his position among the top three underscores his exceptional valor and distinction within David’s army.

The story of Abishai offers several lessons for believers. His willingness to confront overwhelming odds demonstrates the importance of bravery and skill in the face of adversity, reminding us that God can empower us to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles. His dedication to David, his brother Joab, and the kingdom of Israel highlights the value of loyalty and commitment in our relationships, calling Christians to remain steadfast in devotion to God, His Word, and His people. Recognizing and honoring those who display extraordinary qualities, as Abishai’s reputation among the three shows, encourages us to appreciate and celebrate the gifts God has bestowed on others. Ultimately, Abishai’s achievements were possible because of God’s presence and empowerment, urging us to trust in God’s strength and guidance as we face our own challenges.
