Was he not most honourable of three? therefore he was their captain: howbeit he attained not unto the first three.

This verse closes the list of David’s mighty men (2 Samuel 23:8-39). The “three” were the top-tier warriors: Jashobeam, Eleazar, and Shammah. The verse speaks of Abishai, Joab’s brother, who was most honorable among the next tier, the “thirty,” and became their captain. Yet he did not reach the level of the first three.

Meaning

The verse highlights both Abishai’s honor and his limitation. He was great, but not among the greatest. This distinction teaches that God honors faithful service even when one does not reach the highest rank. The parallel account in 1 Chronicles 11:20-21 confirms that Abishai was more honorable than the two, was their captain, but did not attain to the first three. His role is also noted in 2 Samuel 23:18, where he is described as chief of the three.
