2 Samuel 23:2

The Spirit of the Lord spake by me, and his word was in my tongue.

2 Samuel 23:2 (KJV)

These are David’s last words, a prophetic oracle given near the end of his life. In this verse, David declares that the Spirit of the Lord spoke through him and that God’s word was on his tongue. This is a clear claim of divine inspiration: David’s words were not his own but were given by the Holy Spirit. The verse is part of a larger oracle (2 Samuel 23:1-7) that includes David’s description of the righteous ruler (2 Samuel 23:3-4).

David acknowledges that the words he speaks carry God’s authority. His declaration implies that the message is not personal opinion or human wisdom but a direct revelation from God. By saying that the Lord’s word was in his tongue, David shows his deep relationship with God and his submission to divine guidance. This verse emphasizes the concept of divine inspiration, which is present throughout the Bible. It highlights that prophets and messengers of God spoke under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit’s role here is active: the Spirit spoke by David, and God’s word was placed on his tongue. This shows that the source of the message is God Himself, not David’s own skill or insight.

This verse aligns with the broader teaching that holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Ghost (2 Peter 1:21). David is identified as a prophet in Acts 2:30, and Acts 1:16 refers to the Holy Spirit speaking by David’s mouth. These connections confirm that David’s psalms and prophetic utterances were inspired by God. The verse also points forward to Christ, who is the ultimate fulfillment of David’s prophetic words, as seen in the New Testament’s use of David’s psalms to testify of Jesus (Acts 2:25-31). This verse is foundational for understanding the inspiration of the Old Testament and the trustworthiness of David’s writings.

While this verse specifically pertains to David, it carries broader implications for believers today. Christians are called to be vessels through which the Holy Spirit can speak and work. Just as David recognized the Spirit’s influence, believers are encouraged to rely on the Holy Spirit for guidance, wisdom, and the proclamation of God’s truth. Seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance through prayer, meditation, and studying God’s Word. Recognize the authority and power of God’s Word, allowing it to shape your beliefs, actions, and speech. Surrender to the influence and direction of the Holy Spirit, cultivating a heart of obedience and openness to God’s leading. The same Spirit who inspired David’s words is available to help you understand and apply Scripture today.

This verse affirms that God speaks through His chosen messengers and that His word is reliable and authoritative. It calls us to reverence Scripture as God-breathed and to recognize the Holy Spirit’s work in inspiring and illuminating God’s truth. As you yield to the Spirit’s work in your life, you will experience His transforming power and be able to speak and live according to His will. Trust that the God who spoke through David still speaks through His written Word, and let that truth deepen your confidence in every promise He has given.
