2 Samuel 23:28
Zalmon the Ahohite, Maharai the Netophathite, 2 Samuel 23:28 (KJV)
The book of 2 Samuel is part of the Old Testament and continues the narrative of King David’s reign in Israel. Chapter 23 records David’s final words, including a list of his mighty men—renowned warriors and leaders who stood beside him in battle.
Zalmon the Ahohite is mentioned only in this verse and in 1 Chronicles 11:30. The Ahohite designation likely refers to a clan or group associated with the tribe of Benjamin. Maharai the Netophathite is also recorded here and appears in 1 Chronicles 11:34. The Netophathites were descendants of Netophah, a town noted in the biblical record. Both men were counted among David’s elite warriors.
The inclusion of Zalmon and Maharai, together with the other mighty men listed in the chapter, highlights the loyalty, courage, and dedication they displayed while serving King David. These warriors were instrumental in supporting and defending the kingdom, often risking their lives on the battlefield. Their bravery and commitment demonstrate the strength and unity of David’s kingdom and the divine favor that rested upon his reign.
From their example we draw several lessons.
First, faithful service: Zalmon and Maharai exemplify the value of serving a leader or cause with loyalty and self‑sacrifice. Believers today are called to serve faithfully in various capacities, demonstrating dedication to God’s purposes.
Second, bravery and courage: Their extraordinary courage on the battlefield teaches us to face challenges head‑on, standing firm in faith and relying on God’s help to overcome obstacles.
Third, unity and community: The mighty men formed a close community of warriors who supported one another. This underscores the importance of unity among believers, encouraging us to support and encourage each other as we work together for God’s kingdom.
Finally, recognizing God’s favor: The success of David’s reign was not solely due to his own abilities but also to God’s guidance and blessing. We must acknowledge that our achievements and victories ultimately flow from God’s grace.
Application of these truths calls us to examine our own lives. Are we serving with the same loyalty and courage as Zalmon and Maharai? Do we foster unity within the body of Christ, encouraging one another in our shared mission? By recognizing that every victory comes from God’s favor, we can live with humility, gratitude, and a renewed commitment to serve faithfully, bravely, and together for His glory.
