2 Samuel 23:27
Abiezer the Anethothite, Mebunnai the Hushathite,
2 Samuel 23:27 (KJV)
Context
Second Samuel 23 records David’s last words and then honors the warriors who served him with exceptional bravery. This verse belongs to the closing list of David’s mighty men, found in 2 Samuel 23:8-39. These men came from various towns and tribes, and their names were preserved as a lasting record of their loyalty to God’s anointed king. The list shows that God used ordinary men from different places to establish David’s kingdom.
Meaning
Abiezer the Anethothite came from Anathoth, a town in the territory of Benjamin (Joshua 21:18). This same town later became the birthplace of the prophet Jeremiah (Jeremiah 1:1). Abiezer’s inclusion in the list shows that God used ordinary men from humble places to accomplish his purposes. His name means “my father is help,” reminding us that true strength comes from God.
Mebunnai the Hushathite is likely the same person as Sibbecai, who appears in the parallel list in 1 Chronicles 11:29 and also in 2 Samuel 21:18. Some warriors had more than one name, and this connection helps us identify him more clearly. He was a descendant of Hushah, who came from Judah (1 Chronicles 4:4). This shows that God’s work included people from both Benjamin and Judah, uniting the tribes under David.
Biblical connections
The parallel account in 1 Chronicles 11:29 lists Mebunnai as Sibbecai the Hushathite, confirming that the same man appears in both records. The mention of Anathoth links this verse to Jeremiah, showing that God continued to work through people from the same region over many generations. This connection reminds us that God’s plans often span centuries and involve faithful individuals in every era.
Application
These warriors remind us that faithful service does not require fame or recognition. Their names are recorded even though little else is known about them. In the same way, God values the quiet loyalty and courage of every believer who stands firm in faith and supports others in their spiritual journey. We may not be famous, but our service matters to God.
Serve faithfully in your current role, knowing God sees your work.
Support your leaders and fellow believers with courage and loyalty.
Trust that God can use ordinary people from humble places for his purposes.
Reflection
Consider how you can serve God’s kingdom with the same dedication, even when your work goes unnoticed. Just as these men supported David, we are called to support one another and remain faithful to God in times of adversity. Let their example encourage you to persevere in your own calling, knowing that God remembers every act of faithful service.
