All these things did Araunah, as a king, giue vnto the King: and Araunah saide vnto the King, The Lord thy God accept thee. 2 Samuel 24:23 (KJV)

Context and Background:

2 Samuel 24 recounts an event in the life of King David where he chose to take a census of the people of Israel. This act displeased God because it reflected a reliance on military might rather than trust in God’s sovereignty. As a result, God sent a pestilence upon Israel, causing a severe plague that affected the people. After realizing the gravity of his mistake, David pleaded with God for mercy.

The Role of Araunah:

In this verse, Araunah, also known as Ornan, is introduced as a Jebusite who owned the threshing floor where the plague stopped. David recognized the significance of this location and sought to buy it from Araunah to offer sacrifices to God and stop the plague. Araunah offered to give the land to David, along with the animals needed for the burnt offerings. Araunah offered to sell the threshing floor and the oxen needed for the burnt offerings.

The Act of Generosity:

Araunah’s response to David’s request highlights his generosity. As a subject, he willingly gave all these things to David. He willingly gave the oxen and the threshing floor to David for the agreed price. This act of generosity demonstrates the noble character of Araunah and his willingness to support David in his desire to worship and seek forgiveness from God.

Acknowledgment of God’s Acceptance:

Araunah also acknowledged God’s acceptance of David. By saying, “The Lord thy God accept thee,” he recognized that God had approved David’s desire to offer sacrifices and seek reconciliation. Araunah’s words convey a sense of reverence and respect for God’s authority and power.
