1 Kings 1:26

But me, even me thy servant, and Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and thy servant Solomon, hath he not called.

1 Kings 1:26 (KJV)

David is very old, and his son Adonijah has declared himself king without David’s knowledge. Adonijah invites many people to his feast, but he deliberately leaves out Nathan the prophet, Zadok the priest, Benaiah, and Solomon. Nathan reports this to Bathsheba, Solomon’s mother, so she can act. The omission is not an oversight.

Nathan’s words are a pointed accusation. By listing those who were not called, he shows that Adonijah’s coronation is not legitimate. The excluded men are not random; they are David’s trusted servants. Nathan is David’s prophet and counselor, Zadok is the priest David respects, and Benaiah is the captain of David’s bodyguards. Their absence proves that Adonijah acted without the king’s blessing or God’s plan. Nathan’s report fills what Bathsheba had left out, giving her the full picture.

Earlier, Nathan and Bathsheba had spoken with David about the succession (1 Kings 1:13-14). David had promised that Solomon would be king. Adonijah’s self-promotion directly opposes that promise. The exclusion of these loyal servants sets the stage for David to reaffirm his oath and arrange Solomon’s anointing. David then calls for Zadok, Nathan, and Benaiah to anoint Solomon, confirming God’s choice.

This verse warns against acting without proper authority. Adonijah sought power for himself, ignoring God’s revealed plan. Believers should seek God’s direction and respect the leaders He has placed. Loyalty to God’s chosen servant is more valuable than personal ambition. When we rush ahead, we may exclude those whom God has appointed.

God’s purposes cannot be overturned by human scheming. The faithful actions of Nathan, Zadok, Benaiah, and Bathsheba ensure that Solomon becomes king, confirming that God’s plan prevails. Trust in God’s timing and His chosen way, even when others rush ahead. He works through faithful people to accomplish His will.
