2 Samuel 3:4

And the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith; and the fifth, Shephatiah the son of Abital;

2 Samuel 3:4 (KJV)

This verse is part of a genealogical list of David’s sons born in Hebron. It comes after the death of Saul and the establishment of David as king over Judah, while Saul’s son Ishbosheth ruled the rest of Israel. The list continues in verse 5 with the sixth son, Ithream, and concludes that these six sons were born to David in Hebron.

Adonijah

Adonijah, the fourth son, was born to Haggith. He later attempted to usurp the throne before David’s death, as recorded in 1 Kings 1:5-10, and was executed by Solomon after a second attempt (1 Kings 2:13-25). His ambition led to conflict and tension within David’s household and ultimately contributed to his downfall.

Shephatiah

Shephatiah, the fifth son, was born to Abital. While not much is known about him specifically, his inclusion in the list of David’s sons suggests his importance within the family. His name means “Yahweh has judged.”

The verse highlights the reality of David’s polygamous household and the complex family dynamics that led to later conflicts. The inclusion of the mothers’ names shows the legal and social recognition of these sons. This genealogy also establishes the Davidic line, which is significant for the messianic lineage.

This verse reminds us that God’s sovereign plan unfolds through imperfect human circumstances. Even those who rebel against His purposes cannot thwart His will. We should seek to align our ambitions and desires with God’s will, rather than pursuing self-centred goals that may lead to conflict and strife. It also reminds us of the importance of maintaining healthy family relationships and resolving conflicts in a godly manner.

As we reflect on this verse, we can draw lessons for our own lives. The consequences of personal ambition and the need to seek God’s guidance in all aspects of our lives remain relevant today.
