2 Samuel 5:1

Listen to this article

Then came all the tribes of Israel to Dauid vnto Hebron, and spake, saying, Behold, we are thy bone, and thy flesh. 2 Samuel 5:1 (KJV)

Context: The book of 2 Samuel records the life and reign of King David, the second king of Israel. Chapter 5 marks the moment when David is established as king over all Israel, and verse 1 records the tribes’ approach to him at Hebron.

Unity of Israel: The phrase “all the tribes of Israel” signifies the gathering of the entire nation under David’s leadership. It highlights the unity of the twelve tribes, who had previously been divided and sometimes at war with each other. David’s anointing as king brought a sense of national cohesion.

Recognition of Kinship: The tribes address David, saying, “Behold, we are thy bone and thy flesh.” This declaration emphasizes their shared ancestry and bloodline, affirming David as a rightful descendant of Israel and therefore the legitimate ruler of the tribes.

Biblical Covenant: The unity expressed in this verse fulfills God’s covenant promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, in which He pledged to make them into a great nation (cf. Genesis 12:2). David’s reign and the gathering of the tribes under his rule advance the fulfillment of that covenant with Israel.

Foreshadowing of Christ: For Christians, David serves as a type of the Messiah. The gathering of Israel under David points forward to the future unity of God’s people under Jesus Christ, who brings together believers from every nation and tribe (cf. Ephesians 2:14‑16).

Application: This passage reminds believers of the importance of unity among God’s people. Just as the tribes recognized David’s lordship, Christians are called to acknowledge the authority of Jesus Christ over their lives and to work together for the advancement of God’s kingdom, avoiding division caused by personal agendas.

Conclusion: 2 Samuel 5:1 highlights the gathering of Israel’s tribes under David’s kingship, emphasizing unity, kinship, and the fulfillment of God’s covenant. It also points forward to the ultimate unity found in Christ and challenges believers today to pursue harmony and recognize Christ’s lordship.
