2 Samuel 5:2
Also in time past when Saul was king ouer vs, thou wast hee that leddest out and broughtest in Israel: and the Lord said to thee, Thou shalt feed my people Israel, and thou shalt bee a captaine ouer Israel. 2 Samuel 5:2 (KJV)
In this verse the elders of Israel address David, recalling that during Saul’s reign he was the one who led Israel out and brought it back. The statement comes at the moment when David is being anointed king over all Israel after Saul’s death, and it highlights both his military role and God’s sovereign choice of him as leader. The phrase “feed my people Israel” signifies David’s responsibility to care for the nation, not only in physical provision but also in spiritual shepherding, while “captain over Israel” denotes the authority God gave him to govern according to His will.
The passage underscores God’s leadership: it acknowledges that David’s successes in battle were ultimately the work of the Lord, who appointed him and enabled his feats. This divine appointment reminds believers that God is the ultimate authority in establishing leaders, and that His purposes may differ from human expectations.
Application to today’s believers includes several points. First, recognize God’s sovereign appointments and respect His choices, trusting that He equips those He calls. Second, emulate David’s reliance on God’s guidance, seeking divine wisdom, humility, and integrity in any position of responsibility. Third, cultivate a shepherd’s heart—prioritizing the physical and spiritual well‑being of those under one’s care, just as a shepherd tends to the flock. Finally, the Lord’s promise to David demonstrates God’s faithfulness; believers can trust that God will fulfill His plans for those who remain faithful.
Overall, 2 Samuel 5:2 highlights the divine appointment and responsibilities of David as king, offering a model of godly leadership rooted in divine guidance, compassionate service, and confidence in God’s unchanging promises.
