We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth;

Context

Paul, along with Silvanus (Silas) and Timothy, writes to the church in Thessalonica, a congregation he founded during his second missionary journey. The opening greeting establishes that every spiritual blessing flows from the Father and the Son. This salutation sets the tone for the entire letter, which expresses gratitude for the Thessalonians’ growth in faith and love.

Meaning

Paul says, “We are bound to thank God always for you,” using language that conveys moral necessity. The Greek word behind “bound” (opheilomen) means “we owe,” indicating that thanksgiving is not optional but a fitting response to God’s work. The phrase “as it is meet” (axion estin) reinforces that this gratitude is right and proper. The reason for such thanks is twofold: their faith is growing exceedingly (hyperauxanei, meaning to grow beyond measure), and their love, or charity, toward one another is abounding (pleonazei, meaning to overflow). The word “charity” in the King James Version is agape, the selfless, other-oriented love that marks genuine Christian community. The phrase “every one of you all toward each other” emphasizes that this love is mutual and characteristic of the whole church, not just a few individuals.

Application
